Mehr als zwei Drittel des albanischen Staatsgebiets werden von Bergland und zum Teil von Hochgebirgsregionen eingenommen. Vom Shkodrasee im Norden bis nach Vlora im Süden erstreckt sich eine zum Teil nur wenige Kilometer breite Schwemmlandebene entlang der Küsten. Teile davon sind Sumpfgebiet.
