Zur Wurzel des Namens Albanien, die sich neben Arba auch in den antiken Ortsbezeichnungen Arva und Arbia wiederfindet, gibt es verschiedene Hypothesen. Sie könnte im illyrischen Arb (Dunkelheit, Grün, Bewaldetes) liegen. Möglicherweise geht sie auch auf das vorkeltische Wort Alb (Hügel bzw. Berg) zurück, von dem das Wort Alpen abgeleitet ist. Eine andere mögliche Herkunft ist das indoeuropäische albh (weiß), von dem Albino und Albion abstammen. Das keltische Wort für Schottland war Albain und Alboin wurde.
