Nach der Volkslegende empfinden sich die Skipetaren als "Adlersöhne".
Seit der Unabhängigkeit Albaniens vom Osmanischen Reich 1912 ist die rote Nationalflagge mit dem schwarzen Adler in Gebrauch - ab 1928 unter König Zogu mit dem goldenen Skanderbeg-Helm, nach 1939 mit der italienischen Königskrone und dem faschistischen Liktorenbündel und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis 1991 mit dem fünfzackigen goldumrandeten kommunistischen Stern.
