In dem Werk Geschichte, das zwischen 1079 und 1080 vom byzantinischen Historiker Michael Attaliates geschrieben wurde, wird erstmals Bezug genommen auf die Albanoi, die sich 1043 gegen Konstantinopel aufgelehnt hatten, und auf die Arbanitai als Untertanen des Herzogs von Dyrrachium (dem heutigen Durrës). Die Italo-Albaner und die albanischen Minderheiten (heute noch in Griechenland) sind im Verlaufe der Zeit unterschiedlich bezeichnet worden: Arbënuer, Arbënor, Arbëneshë, Arbreshë.
