Nach einem Bericht des Guardian Weekly vom April 2004 ist Albanien das Land mit der höchsten Umweltverschmutzung in Europa. Es gibt eine starke Wasser-, Boden- und Luftverschmutzung durch die Altlasten der Industrie. Der Anstieg der Luftverschmutzung in den letzten Jahren hat seine Ursache jedoch im Zuwachs an Automobilen, die meist als Gebrauchtwagen aus dem Westen eingeführt werden. Hierbei werden wegen der schlechten Beschaffenheit des Straßenbelags oft alte robuste Dieselfahrzeuge der Marke Mercedes.
