Die Bezeichnung Albanoi könnte sich allmählich auch auf andere illyrische Stämme ausgeweitet haben, bis ihr Gebrauch für alle Albaner allgemein wurde. Nach Ansicht des albanischen Gelehrten Konitza ersetzte die Bezeichnung Albanien die Bezeichnung Illyrien bis zum Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts nicht vollständig. Das Wort "alba" bzw. "arba" scheint mit der Stadt Arba (heute Rab, Kroatien) verbunden zu sein, die in prähistorischen Zeiten durch den illyrischen Stamm der Liburner bewohnt und erstmals 360 v. Chr.
